Thanks to all the hard work from the folks mentioned above in
their loving care getting these sources out. All 3 audience
recordings were nothing short of spectacular and the transfer
jobs to digital were all very well done.

Tech Notes

FLAC/SHNs were decoded to wave. Wavmerge was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch all of the sources. SF8.0 was used for the EQ setting
pre mixdown. This is a 55% SBD, 15% AUD1, 15% AUD2, 15% AUD3 mix.
- Mixed by dan@am-dig.com
- FLAC conversion done 15-JAN-2007
- Artwork at 300dpi by dan@am-dig.com
- For best results print at the highest resolution onto glossy
photo paper. Design for use in a clear double jewel case.

Notes

This 5.1 mix utilizes 5 fully discrete channels.

The SBD and all 3 AUD sources all had cuts between just about
every song in the first set. The SBD was even missing a note
or two at the start of each song. A huge effort was made to
make the first set flow as naturally as possible. In most
cases the transition from song to song sounds very good as if
the Dead weren\'t tuning up much and just rattling off song
after song. Losing a naturally flow and between song cuts are
a big pet peeve of mine. I hope you enjoy all the hard work
that went to keep this sounding smooth and natural.

d1t01 \"Bertha\" first 8 seconds is from a matrix mix of AUD
sources D\'EQed. Then a several second crossfade to the SBD.
This is very short and the patch ends before the lyrics
begin. Hardly noticeable and not at all distracting.

d1t04 \"CC Rider\" the line \"see what you done done\" sounds like
a tiny skip but it is on the SBD and all 3 AUDs so it was also
coming over the PA. Probably a problem with Bobby\'s microphone.
There is also an echo effect on the vocals. This is not a
synch issue.

d1t05 \"Althea\" first 2 seconds is from a matrix mix of AUD
sources D\'EQed. Then a several second crossfade to the SBD.
This is very short patch, hardly noticeable and not at all
distracting.

d2t01-02 \"Touch > Women\" is made entirely from a mix of all
3 AUD sources. Fun to hear both a stereo mix of all 3 AUD
recordings and even better in the 5.1 multichannel mix.

d2t01 \"Touch Of Grey\" was missing 3.187 seconds from the AUD3
source. This was patched with a matrix mix of AUD1 + AUD2.

d2t01 \"Touch Of Grey\" Weir hits a real sour note at the start
of the song. Out of tune and bad timing. This is not a synch
issue

d2t05 \"Drums\" cassette flips in all 3 AUD sources during
different portions. B/c these were all located at different
spots complete coverage was achieved.

d3t03 \"Spanish Jam\" cassette flip in SBD source. There was
approx 12 seconds of missing material patched with a matrix
mix of all 3 sources. Plus 5 second crossfades at each end
to make the source transition as smooth as possible. This
came out real nice and is hardly noticeable and not at all
distracting.

Editorial Comments

This is a fantastic show with too many highlights to mention.
The ultra clear SBD was a perfect candidate for a matrix mix
as these great AUDs really opened the recording up.

One of the earliest SBDs I collected in High School with a known
analog generation (3rd gen). That cassette was also missing the
Touch > Women opener which leads me to believe that there is no
SBD recording for those 2 tunes.

Listen carefully to the 3 AUD source matrix for the Touch >
Women to get a good idea of what it sounded like for the crowd
that night. The stereo matrix and 5.1 multichannel mix give you
a great feel for the room and the small size of the venue. For
different reasons I really like the all AUD mix of those 2 songs.
I think an argument could be made to produce an all AUD source
as a companion to this SBD+AUDs version.

More On DTS

Today\'s audio standards are moving towards multi-channel sound
like DTS, Dolby Digital and DVD-Audio. While the Audio-CD
standard (Red Book) hasn\'t changed to accommodate these new
sound formats, it is still possible to go around the
specification and to put a 5.1 surround recording on a
regular Audio-CD. To play a DTS-Audio-CD you must connect
your DVD/CD player via a digital cable (optical or coaxial)
to your DTS Dolby-Digital receiver. It is not 100% sure that
your receiver will recognize a DTS-Audio-CD, so the first
time you\'re trying to playback a DTS-Audio-CD you must do
a test to determine if it can. Begin with the volume very
low, start the disc and rise the volume gradually. NEVER
listen to a DTS-Audio-CD through the analogue audio outputs
of your CD/DVD player.

Burning Instructions
Burn them the absolute same way as you would burn any normal
Audio-CD from FLAC files.</notes>
